Opening a bank account in Georgia used to be relatively straightforward for foreigners. In 2026 that has changed. Banks are under pressure to comply with international standards, and you can no longer rely on walking in with only a passport. This guide covers what you need and how to make the process smoother.

The big two (and one alternative)

Bank of Georgia (BOG) and TBC Bank dominate the market: best apps, widest acceptance, and most expats use one or both. Credo Bank is often easier for some foreigners to open with, but apps and fees are less favourable. For day-to-day banking and cards, BOG or TBC are usually the better long-term choice.

What banks require in 2026

You will typically need:

• A completed KYC form — often available online; fill it out before your visit to save time.
• Proof of income — e.g. the last 6 months of bank statements from your home country (or current jurisdiction).
• Client contracts (or similar) proving where your money comes from — freelancers and remote workers should have contracts or invoices that match the income they declare.

Banks want a clear, consistent story: who you are, what you do, and where the funds originate. Gaps or contradictions lead to delays or refusals.

Pro tip: Solo and Concept (VIP tiers)

BOG’s “Solo” and TBC’s “Concept” are premium tiers costing around $10–$15/month. In return you get a dedicated, English-speaking banker (often via WhatsApp), which can dramatically simplify KYC, problem-solving, and ongoing service. For expats and digital nomads, this is often worth the fee.

Everyday payments

Once your account is open: Apple Pay and Google Pay work widely in Tbilisi, even at small vendors. Cash is rarely necessary in the city. In the mountains (e.g. Svaneti, Kazbegi), carry cash.
